MATTHEW HUBBARD

Operator · Leader · Writer · Host

Different settings. Same recurring human problems.

I have led teams in multi-unit specialty retail, finance, restaurants, dog daycare and boarding, and healthcare operations. The settings changed. The human problems did not nearly as much as you would think.

People still need clarity. Accountability still gets uncomfortable. Strong performers still get frustrated by weak standards. Leaders still avoid conversations they know they need to have. Teams still confuse being busy with making progress. And somewhere in the middle of all of it is a manager who is responsible for the result without controlling half the things affecting it.

That is the perspective I bring to Well, Damnit. I am interested in practical leadership, management, execution, and what actually happens after the motivational quote stops being useful.

“Well, damnit” is the moment when the neat version of leadership runs into the human version. Someone did not follow through. The decision got kicked upstairs. The high performer is furious. The nice person is not performing. The leader disagrees with the message they still have to deliver.

This is where I want to talk about that part out loud. Not leadership as a collection of inspirational habits. Leadership as responsibility, judgment, accountability, uncomfortable conversations, competing priorities, and people who refuse to behave like clean little case studies.

Different people. Same problems. That is the interesting part.

What you'll find here

THE OPERATING PRINCIPLES.

01High standards are not the same thing as being an asshole.
02Accountability is not punishment. Avoiding it is not kindness.
03Busy and effective are not synonyms.
04Transparency gets harder when the truth is inconvenient.
05Leadership is what you do when the easy answer stops working.
Well, Damnit.

Well, damnit, here we go again.

THAT'S THE IDEA.

Well, Damnit. is a home for candid conversations and writing about leadership, management, accountability, culture, execution, and the messy human work nobody explains before they put you in charge.
